National Statistics
Publishing national statistics on animals used in research or teaching can serve several important functions. These include supporting transparency and informed ethical discussion, and providing an objective basis for policy-making and resource allocation.
At present, not all jurisdictions in Australia collect or publish animal use statistics. This means there are no reliable statistics at the national level despite recommendations over many years to address this gap.
ANZCCART has therefore developed an Options Paper that outlines possible models for national reporting of statistics. This work has been assisted by an advisory panel comprising of persons offering regulatory, institutional, animal protection and community perspectives.
Public consultation on the Options Paper has now closed and a de-identified summary of feedback is being prepared. It is planned that this will be followed by the development of a proposed model which will be released in a further consultation with jurisdictional governing bodies and other stakeholders. If you still wish to view the Options Paper, for reference only, it may be downloaded here.
